Woman's Life Insurance Society Sponsors New Volunteer Day to Promote Partnerships Between Young People and Adults

First Annual Join Hands Day Scheduled

for June 17

(Port Huron - May 30, 2000) - Join Hands Day, the nation’s first and only day set aside to bridge the generational divide by bringing young people and adults together as partners through volunteering, takes place Saturday, June 17.

Join Hands Day is an opportunity for adults and young people to come together and make life better in their communities, working side by side to improve neighborhoods and learn from each other. Sponsored by America’s Fraternal Benefit Societies in partnership with the Points of Light Foundation, Join Hands Day encourages inter-generational partnerships that foster greater mutual understanding, respect, and trust.

According to Wendy L. Krabach, Director of Communications and Fraternal Services for Woman's Life Insurance Society, "This is an opportunity for adults and young people who live in the same community to interact together, to join hands to make their community a better place to live." Krabach adds, "An important goal of Join Hands Day is to make it an event that engages young people and adults as project partners in the entire process from the planning stages to the actual work."

Woman’s Life Insurance Society is pleased to announce that it will take part in this brand new day of national service created to awaken America’s fraternal benefit system and improve things in communities across the county. The one-day event can introduce volunteering to different audiences of all ages and encourage participation in service projects throughout the year. Scheduled on Father’s Day weekend, it provides a focal point for new experiences and relationships with extended families.

We would like to invite your youth group to participate in creating and implementing a Join Hands Day project. An organizational meeting is being held at the Woman’s Life Insurance Society home office at 1338 Military St. (next to the post office), Port Huron at 7:00 p.m. on May 1, 2000. One adult and one youth representative from each participating group would need to attend this meeting. Youth groups, families or adult volunteers interested in participating in Join Hands Day can call Cindy Brown at Woman's Life Insurance Society, 985-5191, ext. 281 for more information.

Since its founding in 1892, Woman’s Lifeâ  has contributed millions of dollars in matching funds to augment the volunteer efforts of its local units throughout the United States and Canada. In 1999 that amounted to $205,800 raised and donated to people in need and other charitable organizations. That same year, members conducted more than 58,000 acts of community service and donated nearly three-quarters of a million volunteer service hours. If valued at today's minimum wage rate, the many volunteer service hours donated by Woman's Life® members would be equal to another $4.3 million.
